Growing Feet, Healthy Futures: Why Children's Foot Health Matters

Children's feet are constantly growing and developing, making them the foundation for a lifetime of movement. While many foot concerns are a normal part of development, others may benefit from early assessment and treatment to help prevent discomfort or ongoing issues as your child grows.

A paediatric podiatry assessment looks at much more than just your child's feet. We assess how they walk and run, their foot posture, balance, muscle strength, flexibility and overall lower limb development. This allows us to identify any concerns that may be affecting their mobility, participation in sport or everyday activities.

Many parents seek advice if their child frequently trips, complains of sore feet or legs, walks on their toes, or if they notice uneven shoe wear or unusual walking patterns. In many cases, these concerns are completely normal but having them assessed can provide reassurance and help determine whether any treatment or monitoring is needed.

Children can also experience a range of common foot conditions, including ingrown toenails, plantar warts (verrucae), heel pain, flat feet and skin concerns. These conditions can often become painful or interfere with school, sport and play if left untreated. Fortunately, most can be managed effectively with early intervention and a personalised treatment plan.

Treatment is always tailored to your child's individual needs and may include footwear advice, stretching or strengthening exercises, activity modifications, nail care, wart treatment or, where appropriate, custom foot orthotics to provide additional support and improve foot function.

Healthy feet are essential for keeping children active, confident and comfortable. If you have any concerns about your child's feet, walking pattern or lower limb development, a podiatry assessment at Coorparoo Podiatry Centre can provide peace of mind and ensure they're on the right path as they continue to grow.
